Today is our final day in Austria. Sankt Johann im Pongau has been a really nice place to spend a week. With better weather it could have been perfect. There is a restaurant nearby that we have been to several times for dinner and a couple of times for morning coffee and tea. Tonight when the man who we have mostly interacted with and appears to be the the owner came to take our order, he addressed us as "my friends." When we told him we leave in the morning, he asked if we would come for breakfast first. Sadly the answer to that is no.
Today we visited a castle we have passed a number of times while going to and from other places. Burg Hohenwerfen has sat imposingly on the top of a cliff for over 900 years. It was built as a defensive fortification. Over centuries it was the scene of many attacks and sieges. We took a tour of the castle and watched a really interesting birds of prey demonstration. Surprisingly they had a bald eagle.
The castle had a ton of stairs and steep hills to climb. It really did a job on my knee. When we went to the next place I waited for Jim in the car. We weren't sure how much climbing would be involved.
That stop was Liechtensteinklamm. It is a gorge approximately 1.5 km deep. They say it's the most beautiful and popular gorge in Austria. Jim was gone a really long time and took a ton of photos and videos on this phone. He was very impressed.
Tomorrow we leave Austria and go to Germany for time with the family. I'm looking forward to that!
